Homemade sloppy Joe's
Tonight was supposed to be taco pizza and a big delicious salad that I've been craving, but the son, Kyle was home and he's not home for dinner very often anymore since he works second shift, so I wanted to make something he likes and he doesn't like taco pizza.
Funny story about sloppy Joe's. I've been making them with Manwich since we got married, almost 24 years ago. Nothing was ever said.....until about 21 years in. Then hubby says, I don't really like sloppy Joe's. Kyle pipes in, me neither. I said, WHAT?! are you guys kidding me?! I've been making these all these years and you don't like them?? In this house we have a "golden rule". If I make something and you don't like it, tell me, because if you don't...and worse yet, if you tell me you DO like it, I will make it again...and again...and again!! Apparently for 20+ years!!!
I love sloppy Joe's and didn't want to lose them from the dinner menu, so my search began for a homemade recipe. We tried a few, nobody liking them....until we came across this one. I've been making it for about 4 or 5 years maybe? And they love it. I made sure to tell them that they better let me know from now on!! Geez!!
I hope you enjoy too!!
1 lb hamburger
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp yellow mustard
3/4 cup ketchup
3 tsp brown sugar
salt & pepper to taste
In skillet, over medium heat, brown ground beef, onion and green pepper; drain off liquids. Stir in garlic powder, mustard, ketchup & brown sugar; mix thoroughly. Reduce heat, simmer for 30 minutes. SIDE NOTE: it DOES NOT take 30 minutes for this to be good! I've made it in a hurry and eaten after 10 or 15 minutes. The more you simmer it, the less sloppy, so use your own judgement!
